Osteoporosis may be a condition where the bones become thin, fragile, brittle and susceptible to fractures. Literally, osteoporosis means spongy bones. which literally means porous bone, may be a disease during which the density and quality of bone are reduced. Often there are not any symptoms until the primary fracture occurs.

Bone lives tissue that’s constantly being weakened and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of the latest bone doesn’t continue with the loss of old bone. Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races.

SYMPTOMS

There typically are no symptoms in the early stages of bone loss. But once your bones have been weakened by osteoporosis.

  • Backache
  • A gradual loss of height and an accompanying stooped posture
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Decreased height over time
  • Stooping of posture
  • Spontaneous bone fractures

RISK FACTORS

Some risk factors for osteoporosis are out of your control, including:

  • Body mass index lesser than 18.5
  • History of amenorrhea, i.e. irregularities of periods in women
  • Insufficient calcium intake
  • Someone in the family having osteoporosis
  • Small stature and thinness of body’s frame
